It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This is my thought about all things December. The gatherings, actions of love and gratitude, and the joy that occurs is only matched by the giving of life itself. However, this can be a very financially stressful time for some. While decorating and cooking lots of food may bring joy, and gifting can also be a great gesture, the holidays don’t have to make or keep you broke. Let’s take a look at three simple ways to survive the holidays financially.
- Prioritize
Determine what means more to you during this time. Maybe the family gathering together to have a good meal is most important. On the other hand it could be the moment everyone shares the joy of opening gifts they have wanted for many months. Perhaps you just want to enjoy moments of solitude. Whatever will make this time of the year the best for you, focus on that. This way you can spend your money mainly creating the moments that matter the most.
2. Plan
Things become extremely burdensome when we try to do them at the last minute, or without having a plan. If you have to bring a family together or celebrate from a distance, it would be wise to establish the place, time, and activities beforehand. This saves time and money because it helps to avoid more than one person doing or buying the same thing. If you plan on giving gifts they should have already been a part of your budget. If they weren’t, and you find yourself to have some wiggle room for spending, don’t go overboard. Everything may not go according to plan, but starting out with one can make all the difference between enjoying and regretting the holidays.
3. Be Present
Most times the greatest gift you can give is your presence. This is a good time to slow down and spend time with family and friends. Time is money, but this time can make up for the money you may not have. This practice should not just start during the holiday season. It will be more appreciated when it becomes a natural part of your everyday giving. Kids and adults appreciate the time you take to listen, engage or simple just be.
